How to join Oswestry Otters
Oswestry Otters Swimming Club is always keen to recruit new members who are keen to train for swimming competition. Their high-achieving junior squad were awarded the Oswestry & District Sports Council Junior Team of the year award in 2007. The ideal age to start swim training is between the ages of 7and 9 to develop a sound base of technique and stamina – but very good swimmers up to 10 or 11 would be considered.
With obesity ever on the increase in British youngsters, swimming is a safe and very effective way to get – and stay – fit for life. Being a competitive swimmer builds self discipline and self confidence in children.
The club takes part in various leagues and open competition throughout the year and swimmers who qualify can participate in county, regional and national events, as well as excelling in their school swimming galas.
Swimmers who are considered to be at ASA Level 9 or equivalent will go straight into the coaching squad. Those who need a little more work on their strokes and skills will start in the pre-squad group. As a minimum, younger swimmers will be able to comfortably complete at least 100 metres in front crawl, 50 metres in backstroke and breaststroke, to demonstrate basic butterfly technique, and show a willingness to learn and take part in competition.
Contact Karen Edwards on 01691 655006 or edwarkj@aol.com. You will be invited to come along to an appropriate training session with swimmers of similar ability. This session is offered free of charge, for you to have a go, and show us what you can do. If the coaches feel you meet the criteria, you will be given further information about training sessions available to you.
You can always just come along and watch a training session – see ‘Training Sessions’ for details.
